The Building on Obilní trh
Hynšt, Lukáš ; Štěpánek, Martin (referee) ; Kratochvíl, Jan (advisor)
The current appearance of the surroundings of the Obilní trh, a square with a park situated nearby the city centre of Brno, isn’t unproblematic. Above all, on Údolní Street, between the tram stop and the Office of the Public Defender of Rights, there is an inadequate car park and a torso of a terraced building in an unsatisfactory condition. All this is a flaw in the beauty already represented by the park on the Obilní trh and the forest park adjacent to the Špilberk Castle. This work places the building of the Office of the Defender of Children's Rights - an institution that is to be established in the Czech Republic soon to control the progress of authorities, as well as other institutions that may interfere with the child's social and legal status instead of parking lots and neglected buildings. The solution is designed to be modern, open, and sustainable. With its idea and concrete form, it suggests that it welcomes children and their parents with open arms, but it is also a pleasant place for employees who implement the institution's powers daily. In addition to the "office" itself, the building and its surroundings offer parking, spaces for commercial use and for temporary accommodation. Its visual side suitably illustrates the surroundings full of greenery and the bustle of social life.
The Role of Public Editors in a Comparative Perspective
Makhinchuk, Yuliia ; Moravec, Václav (advisor) ; Součková, Barbora (referee)
The bachelor thesis The Role of Public Editors in a Comparative Perspective examines the position of ten ombudsmen from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Canada, Portugal, and Denmark. Using a qualitative method of semi-structured interviews conducted with ten respondents representing television, radio, print and online media, it finds out, which of the two models proposed by Dutch media theorists Arjen van Dalen and Mark Deuz they lean towards. The results show that a minority of ombudsmen fall under the definition of the reader's advocate, so the majority represent the paper's ambassador. However, the interviews show that this model does not sufficiently reflect reality, as each medium and ombudsman has a different nature. The findings further show that the rise of social media and misinformation puts ombudsmen in a position where they must not only explain editorial practices to audiences, but also defend certain journalists.

1 Abstract Master Thesis titled The future of public editors in the time of technological convergence deals with the issue and phenomena of ombudsmen and public editors as part of self-regulation of journalists. Specifically, it focuses on ombudsmen, that were established by the Czech public media - Czech Radio and Czech Tv, between the years 2016 and 2018. It compares these ombudsmen with their counterparts in other countries, where they face the progressing phasing out of this role in newsroom. This thesis will first try to establish and describe the theory of ethics and morals and their impact on the history and evolution of media ethics. This Thesis will also mention the historical role of ombudsmen in United states, Europe and other parts of the world. The role of ombudsmen in the newsroom and their relationship will then be compared to the emerging relationship of press and social media, who also serve as alternatives to mainstream media. The practical part of this thesis will focus on interviewing both ombudsmen currently working in Czech media, the executive directors who were the main push for establishing them, and two journalists from United States, who were public editors just a few years ago and who will talk about their experience with the job.
